Tips for Reef Fishing

Reef fishing is one the most popular types of fishing trip. Normally, reef fishing trips target ‘reef fish’ which refer to several species that live amongst or are frequently caught around reefs.

The species which are included in the reef fishing category are triggerfish, snapper, barracuda, light tackle, coral trout, emperor and many more.

A reef fishing trip needs an experienced captain and local guide. Choose professional fishing charters in Sydney to guide your fishing trip. Going into unfamiliar water you could end up catching any fish and you may destroy the coral reef and ecosystem.

The key to reef fishing is the reef itself. Even though there are many reefs out there, you need to find the right one. Use a depth finder or GPS map to locate major reefs.

Things To Consider

Location

I would like to remind you that reef fishing is like any other type of fishing, it is nothing a one hundred percent guarantee. You may find tons of fish in the area one day, but none at all the next day. Choose major reefs instead of others.

Beware of the bottom. A live coral reef can go down to a depth of 30 metres or it can be raised out of water during the low tide. You need to be careful because you do not want to destroy them. Coral reefs are hard like a rock and form the shelters for marine wildlife.

Boat Position

Be cautious before anchoring because some areas are no anchor zones. You can anchor on the bottom but not on a reef or you can go drifting but it is a lot more difficult. You may need to cast anchor for catching bigger fish such as yellowtails.

Boat position is important. You need to know the current and wind and locate yourself upwind and up current. That is for free-lined bait.

Equipment

The right equipment is needed for reef anglers or it can break and destroy a coralline. You may need a very strong, heavy fishing rod for catching big fish. You can use spooling trolling reel or spinning gear. But make sure that the reel is able to bear a heavyweight. Braided lines are also recommended.

Fishing Rig

Along the rig line, a large egg-shaped sinker should be installed. Attach a high-quality swivel below the sinker and attach a large hook to the rig. Use a fishing leader at 12-22 inches. Prepare several rigs on your trip, you do not know if they will get broken or not.

Bait

Live bait works well. Live shrimps, crabs or mullets can be used. You can use frozen baits or pieces of fish as an alternative, but make sure they are of a good quality for achieving more effective catches.
