Do you I need certification to become a life coach?

In most places around the globe you actually don’t need a certification to become a life coach. Well, that sounds super easy then, yeah? But here’s the catch, because the field of life coaching is highly unregulated, many are taking on clients and calling themselves a “life coach” without any training or skills in the field. This has resulted in many misguided and unsatisfied customers. Then there are those who are wary about paying someone for their valued time and sharing private details about their life without guarantee and comfort of their training. So, more and more these days customer are seeking out life coaches with a certification.

As a life coach if you want to provide your clients with most helpful guidance, acquiring training in certain fields can prepare you better for the job. How much will it costs to get certified?

Like a college degree, earning your life coaching certification is the best way to become an expert at your craft. Also like a college degree, it’s going to cost some money so be sure to choose your program wisely.

Most respected coaching certification programs will cost around $5,000 to $10,000, and more for a complete certification course. Given that your earning potential as a life coach is upwards of $100,000 a year, this isn’t a huge deal if you play your cards right. Before you pay out $5,000 of your hard-earned money, it’s best to understand the industry inside and out. You definitely don’t want to rush headfirst into this career, pay hefty sums for your certificate, and then decide it just isn’t for you.

Choosing a program

As in the field of life coaching, training programs can also go without regulation. Anyone with a website and a few business cards can start a certification program and whip up a certificate template.  It’s important to research to decipher the real from the fake.

Thankfully, there’s The International Coach Federation (ICF) organization. For over 10 years, the ICF has developed rigorous standards that all schools must follow in order to receive their prestigious accreditation. These programs are called Accredited Coach Training Programs, or ACTPs, and there are hundreds of ACTPs to choose from all over the world, each with their different areas of specialization and methods of training. When looking for the perfect coaching program that fits your needs, be sure you only choose programs that are ICF accredited.
