Health care services sector becomes the fastest-growing sector in the US by 2020, accounting for over a quarter of over 20 million jobs, according to a government report.
The major changes in the structure of the American workforce over the next decade is expected to be driven by an aging population and booming Hispanic population.
In its biannual Employment Outlook report for job growth for 2010 and 2020, the US Department of Labor on Wednesday said retiring World War II baby boomers will yield up to 33.8 million jobs for total vacancies of 54 million.
The employment rate projected in the said period is seen a major turnaround from the jobs data recorded in recent years that had seen falling down following the onslaught of economic recession brought about by the 2008 financial crisis.
The government data also projects a surge of retirement, with a slowdown of population growth that meant WW II baby boomers will make up a quarter of US workers, nearly 20 percent up from current figures.
In terms of socio-cultural profile, Hispanics are seen joining the workforce at a fast pace, with 18.6 percent of overall employment by decade’s end, up from today’s 14.8 percent.
On the other hand, Asians and African-Americans will see their share in the labor force up by 1 percentage point or less to 5.7 percent and 12 percent, respectively.
