Water damage is one of the most common causes of home insurance claims. And you’d imagine that a water leak would be easy to spot, though you’d be surprised. Often a leak can go unnoticed for quite some time, particularly if it’s only a minor one. Your bills will have gone up an unnoticeable amount and your water pressure might not have been affected all that much either. In any case, the water is still leaking, damage is being done and you will be paying for more than you are using.

It’s all too easy for water to escape, whether that’s via a faulty appliance or through a leak in your plumbing and then it can cause all sorts of issues from there. So, how can you tell if you’ve got a leak or not?

Land SurveyingThe Easiest Way to Spot a Water Leak in Your Home

Well, the simplest way to check if you have a water leak, is to turn off all faucets in and outside your home. Once you’re certain that there is absolutely no water running, take a look at your water meter. If it doesn’t appear to be moving, or you’re unsure, take a reading and then pop back after an hour or so to see if it’s moved. Of course, if the reading has changed, then you do indeed have a water leak. Now, the next step is to identify where the leak is coming from.

Is the Leak Inside or Outside?

The next step is to repeat the process, but first, find the main shut off valve for your house and then switch it off. Following that, check the meter for any movement again. If the meter moves, then you know that the leak is coming from outside the house, if it does not, then your leak is somewhere inside.

Now, if you establish that the leak is coming from inside your house, then you should do a few routine checks before rushing in and hiring a plumber. Once you know that it’s inside, it could be far easier to spot and easy enough to rectify. If, however, you do struggle to locate the leak inside your home, get on the phone to your local plumber and have them come out as soon as possible. A leak that’s left unchecked for too long can cause irreparable damage to your property.

GPR serviceIf the Leak is Outside Your Home

In the event that the leak is coming from outside your home, then you’re going to have to hire a professional water pipe leak detection service. Unless you fancy excavating your garden and digging up all of the pipes without causing any more damage?

The benefit of hiring a water pipe leak detection service, is the fact that they can spot a leak without even having to dig anything up beforehand. Using the latest in GPR technology they will be able to successfully locate the leak in a nonintrusive way, quickly and efficiently. Following that, they will be able to advise you on how best to rectify the problem.
